Old Wulfs Hockey players enjoy world cup success

7th Grand Masters Hockey World Cup, The Hague, Netherlands, 3rd - 13th June 2014.
While enjoying the great Sky Sports coverage of all 76 world cup matches over the last fortnight, hockey fans will have been disappointed to see the main England teams returning without medals after the men finished 4th and the ladies 11th.
It has been a different story in the Masters competitions, with OWHC involvement in a number of the world cup classes.
Andy Hamilton was selected to play for Ireland O60's who were competing in the O60,s competition for the first time and finished in a creditable 10th place in front of South Africa, Malaysia, New Zealand, Italy and France. Their best result in the group games was a 2-1 victory against Scotland.
Tim Lorimer was selected for Scotland O60's and scored twice during the competition. Scotland are regulars at the World Cup and after finishing a disappointing last in the group games won all of their cross-over games to finish 9th. They gained their revenge against Ireland in their last game with a 2-1 victory thus reversing the result in the group game.
The gold medal winners were Australia, Netherlands won silver and England got the bronze medal.
Glyn Thomas was in the Wales O65 team as manager and one of two goalkeepers in their squad. Wales finished 3rd in the group games having lost to Australia and Germany but beat both Scotland and Japan in the cross-over games to finish in 6th place. Glyn played in most of the later games after the other Welsh keeper was admitted to hospital with suspected pneumonia.
The gold medalists were Netherlands with Australia runners up and England third.
Ray Jeff was playing for England LX O65 in the Trophy Tournament. In the group games LX finished in second place having convincingly beaten Australia and Alliance but being held to a 0-0 draw by Netherlands who won the group on goal difference. LX then won both of the cross over games, beating Australia 2-1 in the semi-final. In the final LX again came up against the Netherlands but managed to win in front of the home crowd 3-2 to win the gold medal, Netherlands taking silver.
Most of the players were able to get to some of the full international World Cup games in The Hague to watch England. The men were playing well but lost in the semi final to Netherlands, however the ladies were disappointing and lost four of their group games but did manage a win against Germany.
