Umpires - we need you!

Posted by Nobody on 21 February 2016

Old Wulfrunians Hockey Club are commited to providing competent and quality umpires to all our game what ever level you play.

The committee are already preparing for the next season and with plans to grow the club membership and create additional teams we need Umpires to support us, no umpires = no game.

Quite simply, is there anyone within our club set up who would like to take up a fabulous opportunity of having the “best seat in the house” at matches and commit to regularly Umpiring.

We always need more umpires, because we simply can’t play without them. We could all do with remembering that from time to time, and until you’ve blown the whistle for a few games, you have no idea how challenging and rewarding it can be.

Becoming an umpire is an excellent way to expand your hockey knowledge.  It will also help you as a player, giving you an appreciation for the wider game and improving both your temperament and concentration. As well as this, we all know that nobody can resist a person in a yellow polo shirt!

BECOMING AN UMPIRE

Do you really know the rules as well as you think you do? Could you do with brushing up a bit? You can find out more on England Hockey’s Website.

The Umpire Education Online site contains a Rules education and testing section and a module designed to help umpires communicate decisions more effectively.

In the Rules education and testing section, the Rules are presented in an easily understandable way and there are video clips to help illustrate how many of the Rules should be umpired.

Whether you’re an umpire, player, coach or spectator, you’ll find it useful to visit the site to improve your knowledge.

UMPIRE QUALIFICATIONS

If you are interested, we can provide you with the first important stepping stones to becoming a fully qualified Level 1 umpire.

Firstly the club requests you complete an online England Hockey rules test. This is a multiple choice test and will just require some reading and they also provide videos as part of the reading.

Once you have completed this, please contact the club commitee who will consider all applicants for progression to the next available course.
