Match Report

After the highs of last week’s win against Sutton to go top of the league, there was an inevitability that this game would be an opportunity for us to trip ourselves up. Lichfield a place below our 5ths in the league should not have been a great threat. Reality was somewhat different, in many ways they were stronger than Sutton.

Lichfield were a strong mix of skilful youngsters with an experienced backbone that was quite mobile. We started well having the majority of the play in the first 10 or so minutes. However gradually Lichfield played themselves back in, we failed to play with the fluency of the previous week, and ended up going one down following a goal mouth scramble. That gave Lichfield more confidence and they started attacking with some confidence from midfield.

Old Wulfs broke out of defence well with both Puv Samra and Ricky Lally using the aerial ball down the wing to give the forwards the ball in plenty of space. The attacks we put into their day were bound to give us a reward sooner or later, and eventually Gary O’Sullivan scored as is his want at the far post.

In the second half David Carver was moved to man to man mark their centre midfielder and Andy Hamilton came on in central defence. This helped to quell some of their midfield push, but their youngsters in attack gained confidence and kept coming at us. Eventually they got a short corner which they clinically converted. Old Wulfs kept the pressure on and eventually Gary O’Sullivan managed to score a second goal.

A disappointing result following last week’s game, but in reality Lichfield were much better than their league position would suggest, and 2-2 was probably a fair summary of the game.
