Match Report

Old Wulfrunians 10-1 Redditch

Scorers: George Jandu (3), Chris Tibble (3), Ash Taylor (1), Andy Cooper (1), Chris Nightingale (1), Stuart Upton (1)

I know it’s probably taken you long enough to read the scorers list and you now need a break, but for anyone who wants more detail, here’s a match report to go with it.

The seconds dominated 10-man Redditch to leapfrog Ludlow and go fourth in the table.

The first 15 minutes were run by Taylor on the right hand side of midfield, as Redditch decided to give the winger extra space because they didn’t have the players to cover everyone. It wasn’t a good idea. First, Taylor cut inside, beat a defender and hit a reverse into the bottom corner, before winning a short corner and flicking to Nightingale at the near post who deflected home. Then, another run down the right allowed him to set up Tibble for the third.

Now, I feel I may have glossed over that second goal too much, so I’m going to go through it again. So, the seconds won a short corner. And then, they tried to score that short corner. You might still be with me up till now, but this is where it gets confusing. During this attempt, THE BALL WENT IN THE GOAL! An actual, real goal that was on the pitch and everything!

The crowd went wild, captain and goalscorer Nightingale collapsed on the pitch sobbing in celebration, the nightmare was finally over: “We’ve scored a short corner, we’ve scored a short corner!”

Well, at least that’s how I’m choosing to remember it. Not trying to put too fine a point on it, but it doesn’t happen too often.

Anyway, back to the game. Redditch pulled one back to make it 3-1 but Wulfs responded with ANOTHER SHORT CORNER(!!!!!!), this time with a straight strike from Upton.

The second half was more of the same. Tibble scored another two to complete a hat-trick, Jandu got his first and Cooper deflected home a Richard Roberts cross.

A short discussion over who got to take a penalty flick was ended by Jandu shooing Taylor away and then scoring despite the added pressure. Not long after, tired and injured, Jandu chose to stay in the midfield rather than get forward to help with an attack. His Dad, clearly amazed that his own flesh and blood wasn’t doing everything he could to try to get a hat-trick, urged him forward to pick the ball up on the top of the D. He turned, fired into the bottom corner, jogged to the sideline and collapsed on the ground.

Great performance, great win.
