Old Wulfs 2 - Bromsgrove 2 Scorers: Hemmings, Rowlands This was the final game in what can arguably be described as a ‘roller coaster’ season for the 2’s. We all knew that no matter what the outcome today that we were unfortunately heading down into the lower league, a decision I think it’s fair to say we are all pretty disheartened about… But none the less we still had a job to do and we wanted to go down fighting! The previous match against Bromsgrove saw them field a very strong squad, however this time round Brom’s had brought an altogether different squad to play the away fixture it seemed. I don’t think either team will argue when I say that the game was a ‘less than excellent’ showing from both sides, with both teams struggling to put any pace on the ball and chances were missed at either end of the pitch. Nonetheless, our defence headed up by Upton, Lally, Thompson and Hemmings absorbed pretty much all the Brom’s pressure however it was going forward where we lacked direction and that final killer pass. It’s at this point that I’m 80% sure we scored first with a Hemmings drilling the ball into the bottom corner after Satwchwell had made a run to the bi-line and squared the ball across to Rob. Halftime came and it was clear Old Wulfs could have been 3/4 goals to the good, however poor passing and finishing meant we went into the break with a 1-0 score line. The second half was arguably slightly better than the first but nowhere near the quality the 2s could have played at. Gray was once again our anchor in the midfield, distributing the ball around with Nighters and Satchwell ‘running’ up the wings. It’s around ten minutes into the half when the ball hit a Brom’s defender (I can’t remember what it hit, but it was something against the rules), and he carried on to set up Brom’s first goal – something us Old Wulfs chaps weren’t too happy about. Our second came shortly after when a short corner which was struck by Tibble rebounded to Rowlands, who after three attempts finally managed to put it past the keeper. 2-1 to Wulfs, happy days. It’s at this point I’d like to say it was end to end hockey, which to a degree it was, but just without the National League quality at the end. Brom’s managed to pull a goal back in the last two minutes putting the scoreline at 2-2. So that’s the end of our season. Next year Old Wulfs are planning to bounce back, and if we manage to keep the team we have now then that shouldn’t be a problem at all, roll on 2014/15!! MOTM: Rhys Jones |
