2nd Team Vs Wolverhampton

Today saw the clash of the West Midland titans with Old Wulfrunians band of 2nd XI players showing Wolverhampton that this season we are a team pushing for the upper echelons of the league.

After I managed to cram down my BLT sandwich and can of Red Bull (a diet personally endored by Usian Bolt himself), we started the game. From the off Old Wulfs pressed high and dug in, communication was excellent and there was a clear desire to win. Our back four of Nighters, Acton, Cooper and Thompson closed down any oppotunity Wolverhampton managed to create and some calm passing out of defence (90% of the time) really illustrated the potential this team has.

Our consistent pressured paid off with Stuart Upton lofting the ball over the keeper during a short corner. Wolverhamtpon began to understand this wasn't going to be the walkover they expected and the home team continued the pressure that had lead up to the first goal. Our second goal followed another good bout of pressure with Owen 'feather feet' Shave leaping upon a rebound from a short corner. 2-0 to Old Wulfs. Our final goal before the half saw an inspired Billy haynes make a break down the line before finding Shave in the 'D' who then cooley slotted it under the keeper. Shortly before the half though Wolverhampton managed to catch us on the break and bring the scores to 3-1.

The second half was a similar affair to the first. Old Wulfs put in maximum effort and ran the away team ragged. Wolverhampton to their credit began to play some nice hockey in the middle section of the half, however full credit to the defensive teamwork of the home team who managed to keep Wolverhampton at bay. The fourth goal came from a break away goal which saw some lovely passing from Haynes and Shave to find Rowlands on the top of the D completely unmarked and had so much time on the ball he could have written a short sonnet before finally slotting the ball past the keeper.

We saw out the half where we began. Good communication, marking and effort off the ball saw Old Wulfs close out a well fought victory. Again credit must go to Wolverhampton who were very sporting and a good game was had by all. MOTM went to Owen Shave for his tireless efforts upfront.
