Match Report

If hockey matches only had a first half, we would be top of the league. Similarly, if only umpires were all perfect.....

For 35 minute Wulfs trampled all over Stafford, despite Ashworth having to finish early with a bruised knee. Wilson opened the scoring with a trademark drag-flick which seemed to bend Beckham-like beyond the hapless keeper. Ed Hole bagged two more, smashing the backboard in true Hole style, and Wilson added another. Griff prowled like a bald tiger, creating chances like a er.. chancy thing and only blotting his record when presented with a one-on-one with the keeper and mysteriously choosing to dribble towards the sideline. Wulfs were passing the ball sweetly, and picking off Stafford players with well-timed tackles.

Wulfs expected Stafford to come out stronger in the 2nd half and they did. But Wulfs held them off with more well-organised defending. But just like last week, the opposition were gifted two goals thanks to excruciatingly bad decisions by the umpire. You know you are hard done by when even the opposition agree they can't believe their luck. The first involved a ball into the circle that nearly severed Dave Cartwright's ear, and the second a penalty corner that the injector accidently tapped into play before injecting. Oh how we all laughed when both goals were awarded!

Anyway at 4-2 up we should still have been confident, but the familiar second half collywobbles set in. Stafford played a much more controlled game, and seemed to realise that passing the ball to a colleague is a good strategy in hockey. Two more goals and with 5 minutes to go Wulfs suddenely began to play again. Griffiths continued to battle for the team and there were two more great opportunities to take three points. But it was not to be and the game was drawn. Arse.
