Match Report

After a week off Wulfs came into their penultimate game before the Christmas break desparate for a win to improve their league position.

After switching to a 3-2-3-2 formation Wulfs seemed to settle into things more quickly than expected, with some confident play early on, leading to a sweet opening goal; Ablard drilled the ball to the back post where Matt Cartwright expertly deflected the ball into the roof of the net. Tamworth struck back when they caught the Old Wulfs defense flat footed, expecting to hear a whistle that never came.

Approaching half-time Wulfs won a penalty corner, and there began the Mark Wilson show. The debutant dragged the ball high and right past a keeper unable to react.

At half-time Wulfs were able to reflect that despite being ahead and playing slightly the better hockey, Tamworth had penetrated with their aerial balls and had the potential to score more goals.

Wulfs enjoyed their best period of the game and maybe the season at the beginning of the second half. The midfield totally dominated possession with Ablard the pivot man, Griffiths the worker bee and Matt Cartwright hurting Tamworth down the left. After five minutes Tamworth had barely touched the ball when Wulfs won another penalty corner, similarly dispatched by Wilson.

When he added his third to make it 4-1 the game looked to be over, but in typical Old Wulfs style there was a twist in the tail. Tamworth made it 4-2 with a good strike from the edge of the D, then they were gifted a third with a terrible howler from the keeper that we won't dwell on. Suffice to say the same keeper made two terrific saves later on to make up for it!

After those chances Wulfs regained control and largely maintained possession to see out the game.
