Match Report | We had the honour of hosting Newport 3rds for their first ever game. Young players are the kryptonite of our team and Newport turned up with a bunch of them. Hardly fair in my opinion. Mind you they also had Bob Preese and Barrie who have a combined age of 194. Still they caught us cold and went 2-0 up. We got back into the game though especially when James Wall came on. There were a string of penalty corners and we finally converted one in style with what looked like a well-rehearsed routine. Truth is of course we rehearse nothing. Then we were awarded a pen stroke after a goal-bound shot hit a foot. I have to talk you through the next bit in some detail. Looking around to see who wanted to take it nobody would catch my eye. I realised it had to be me. This was destiny. In all honesty I didn't expect to score, having never taken one, and after all I was facing the goalkeeping might of Quinnie. So I stepped up, like slow motion in a movie, like the finale of Escape to Victory. Quinnie gave me some bants but I was focused. Glancing to the right, I flicked it left and found the inside of the side-netting. What a moment! I almost took my top off in celebration but to everyone's relief I resisted the temptation. Well we lost 3-2 in the end. Thanks to Kev Tonry for playing a rare out of goal game which gave us all plenty to laugh about. Good game played in a good spirit. Man o' the Match: Dave Parnham. |
