Match Report

With the number of games remaining in short supply, Old Wulf's 3rds still looking for their first win on 2023 welcomed bottom of the table Lichfield 6's to WGS. Old Wulf's got that win but were made to work hard for it.  The game started with Old Wulf’s feeling confident, but this was a very different Lichfield side to the one faced earlier in the season.  What evolved over the first 15 minutes could only described as chaotic, Old Wulf’s as a team appeared discombobulated, but somehow managed to ride the very early pressure from Lichfield. Despite this it was Old Wulf’s who went ahead through Gary O Sullivan assisted by Ryan on 5 minutes, 1-0 OW's. Wulf's began to settle and got their second 9 minutes later on 14 again from Gary, assisted by Nic.  Almost immediately from the restart Old Wulf’s got their 3rd and Jandu's first of the game to put OW's comfortably 3-0 up. Lichfield however were not going to lie down and were awarded a P Flick when the ball caught a defender’s foot following a goal bound shot on the goal line.  (The 3rd match in a row that Wulf's have conceded a Flick). One of the young players stepped up and despite sending Rowley the wrong way, Rowley manged to get a glove on the shot to maintain Wulf's 3-0 lead. On 24 minutes Old Wulf’s did it again score that is this time from a penalty corner injected by Nic to Jandu who got his second of the game and Wulf's 4th. 4-0 and in 24 minutes.  However, Lichfield pulled a goal back on 29 minutes and a second on 34, both field goals to make it 4-2 at the break.

HT 4-2.

Lichfield got the game underway and began to attack with purpose and got their 3rd goal on 44 minutes from open play to bring the deficient back to 1 goal. 4-3 to Wulf's. Wulf’s were then awarded a P flick of their own, and despite the accuracy and pace of the flick Lichfield’s keeper somehow managed to get across and prevent the goal. (Tidying up the masks and grabbing a drink on the way).  Both sides were at times playing some nice hockey and Wulf's got their 5th and Jandu's 3rd from open play on 51mins. 5-3 to Wulf's.  With the clock starting to wind down there was still time for Clarky to rattle Lichfield’s cross bar with a fierce shot from the edge of the D, and for Lichfield to get a 4th on 63 minutes from open play where one of their youngsters put the ball in at the far post at full stretch, to again reduce the difference to a single goal and make for a nervy finish for Wulf's.  However, Wulf's managed to hold on and get that win they have so desperately been seeking since December.

FT 5-4 Old Wulf's Win.

A game where Wulf's should have been out of sight, but again a lack of focus and a few mistakes let Lichfield back into the game. This is not the first time since the commencement of the second half of the season that Wulf's have let a good lead slip, but a win is a win.

Player’s man of the match was a difficult choice this week with 8 votes being shared across 7 players. (Rowley, Clarky, Sam. Ahmed, Nic, Gary, Alex).  And the winner by one vote is Ahmed.

Next Week Wulf's travel to unbeaten 2nd place Telford.
