Match Report

Old Wulf's 3rds made the trip to Leek on a bitterly cold but dry day. In fact with the previous game running late, survival hand warmers wouldn't have gone a miss as most of Old Wulf's were struggling to feel their fingers.

Old Wulf’s made the early advances and were moving the ball well, but always looked vulnerable when possession was lost. Leek were awarded a green card on 15 minutes, but Old Wulf's were unable to make the extra man count. On 20 minutes Leek were awarded a penalty stoke, which just evaded Rowley’s right hand to give Leek a 1-0 lead. Old Wulfs continued to look for an equaliser and with a minute to go and not for the first time of asking Jandu converted an awkward ball past the keeper at waist height following some good work from the midfield duo of Andy & Clarky.

HT 1-1.

Within 3 minutes of the restart Old Wulf’s took the lead again, building from midfield and some good work from Ryan close to the by-line Ryan played the ball towards Jandu who converted close to the goal line. 2-1 Old Wulf’s. Both sides were playing hard and competitive hockey and occasionally no quarter was being given. The midfield were battling hard and having tackled and won the ball an Old Wulf’s player was adjudged to have stick tackled but then was inversely upended. The game continued and on 47minutes Leek got an equaliser from open play. 2-2.  Old Wulf’s thought they had regained the lead when Andy J hit a fierce shot into the net only for the goal to be ruled out by the umpires for being just outside the D. Both sides were at times exhibiting some nice hockey and this was more like the Old Wulf’s of 2022, but it was Leek who came away with the three points when they scored from open play with around 10 minutes to go. 3-2 Leek. Old Wulf’s continued to create chances but couldn’t find the breakthrough and so the game finished with a 3-2 win for 3rd placed Leek, which was a reversal of the scoreline when Old Wulf’s played them at home.

FT 3-2 Leek.

A very hard game a long way from home and a special thanks to all who made the journey and also those who enjoyed the post match hospitality back at Leek Hockey Club.

Special mentions today to Alex Sankey, James ‘Clarky’ Clark, Andy Jackson and Dylan who had to deal with some rough attention wide on the left, and to his credit he wasn’t riled and many commented on how well he handled the attention.

Captains Man of the match goes to James ‘Clarky’ Clark who after a lengthy absence from the game put in an excellent performance.
