Match Report | Old Wulf’s welcomed 3rd placed Wednesbury to WGS still looking for their first win of 2023. Wednesbury won the toss and got the game underway, and immediately began to attack OW’s with precision and pace and could easily have taken the lead within 30 secs had an unmarked player made contact near the post. Old Wulf’s were finding it hard to retain possession and found themselves defending several penalty corners. However much against the run of play OW’s took the lead around 12 minutes. Ian wall seemed to be chasing a lost cause with the ball heading out for a Wednesbury 16. With a Wednesbury player in close attention Ian brought the ball under control, passed ball to Jandu on the edge of the D who put the ball towards the far post where Ryan Doherty ghosted in to tap home. 1-0 OW’s. From the restart Wednesbury immediately began to pile on the pressure and on 20 mins they got their reward 1-1. 2 minutes after the restart they scored another to take the lead 2-1 Wednesbury, and that’s how it remained at Half time. During the second half OW’s showed more attacking intent and on the balance of play had slightly more chances. The midfield were moving the ball well at times and several good balls into Wednesbury’s D were begging to be finished. Wednesbury however got a third from a penalty corner beating a defender close to the post. 3-1 Wednesbury. 15 minutes later an OW’s error led to Wednesbury getting a fourth when a 16 hit out was intercepted close to OW’s 23. OW’s thought they had pulled a goal back when Jandu received the ball at the top of the D to smash the ball past a Wednesbury’s Keeper only for the goal to be ruled out for an OW’s Foot. With 10 minutes to go Wednesbury got their 5th from a well worked penalty corner were Wednesbury passed it around OW’s Defenders to work the opening for the goal. Full Time 5-1 Loss. OW’s 3rds are still searching for their first win of 2023, having had a good first half of the season, its both frustrating and disappointing that 3rds form seems to have deserted them. At times OW’s did play some nice hockey, both Alex Sankey & Ryan Doherty are growing into the game and improving. OW’s can play better and will need to start picking up some points in the remaining 7 games if they wish to halt their slide down the table. |
