Match Report

Old Wulf’s travelled to what was known as Willenhall Comp now the E-ACT Academy school to take on Wednesbury 2nd for a 14:30 start.

Wednesbury were busy undergoing their pre-match preparation and hockey drills as we arrived.

Wednesbury were 2 points below Old Wulf’s in the table, so the much changed line up due to unavailability across the club would have no easy task.

For the first 5 minutes the game was very open and end to end, but it was Wednesbury which took the lead at around 15 minutes Old Wulf’s did have a fair share of the ball but when play broke down Wednesbury attacked as a unit and Old Wulf’s were struggling to cope with the much younger and fitter Wednesbury side.  Wednesbury were looking dangerous every time they came forward and it wasn’t long before they went 2-0 up.   As the half played out Wednesbury did score another before Old Wulfs pulled one back to make it 3-1 Wednesbury, when Lewis hit the post and jack reacting quickest to just about give the ball sufficient power for it to cross the line for his first goal for thirds.

HT 1-3

The second half started in much the same vain as the first, with Old Wulf’s maintaining possession in their own half for the majority of the time but unable to hold onto the ball in the oppositions half. Wednesbury increased their lead getting their 4th within 10 minutes of the restart. Old Wulfs did create their own chances. Jandu received the ball on the edge of the D, placed a well hit shot which looked like it was going in near the post, only for the keeper to produce a save at the last moment. Lewis also went close with a goal bound shot heading for the top left hand corner, only to be thwarted again with an excellent save by their keeper.  Wednesbury scored another to make it 5, before Old Wulf’s scored again with around 10 to go when Lewis beat the keeper with his strike from a penalty corner. And so it finished 5-2 to Wednesbury who go above Old Wulf’s in the table by one place and one point.

FT 5-2 loss.

OW were beaten by a younger fitter side who were well drilled in the basics of hockey who played as a unit. OW first touch was poor in all areas of the pitch which invited pressure or the chance had gone. Yes on another day we could have had 2 goals if their keeper hadn’t pulled off those top class saves, but equally we could have conceded more if not for the heroics of Rowley in goal. Special mention to Jack who is growing as each game passes, and congratulations on his first goal.

However, Players Man of the Match goes to Rowley, with Nic & Jack a close second, and Lewis 3rd.

After a good start to the season 3rds winning run comes to an end and next up is second placed Leek, lets hope we can give a better account of ourselves on our home turf.
