Match Report

A morning fixture to kick off the new season.

Old Wulfs 2s welcomed North Staffs to the WGS with both teams adjusting to a summer of change in their lineups.

Wulfs started the game much stronger and created numerous chances and earned several short corners. Unfortunately we hadn't worked out a preferred short corner routine so didn't test the opposition goalkeeper as much as we would have liked. The defence and midfield had a level of control but we couldn't turn posession into goals.

So half time plenty of positives but no score,

As is the nature of the world we were made to regret our profligacy in front of goal as North Staffs converetd one of their few short corners. Wulfs heads did not drop and we continued to make chances. From another short corner we went unorthodox and decided not to shoot directly. Roberts stop was directed by Lally towards the right of the D to Fisher who beat the goalkeeper.

Wulfs were now well in control and a run along the back line by Lally found Shakespeare for a tap in, the goalie clawed the ball out but the ball definitely crossed the line, unfortunately the umpires didn't have a closeup view and with no VAR to refer to the goal was not given.

The North Staffs side made the most of their good luck and scored shortly after. Wulfs refused to feel sorry for themseleves and continued to press. Near the end of the game we were awarded another short corner. Harman who having recovered from a whack on the knee was tasked with striking this one, and boy do we wish we had let him take short corner duties earlier as he dragged the short low into the corner..

A 2-2 all draw played in a good spirit by both teams marked a positive start to the season.

Just a shout out to everyone who played today. Matt in goal solid as usual (even though he forgot his shorts, thankfully he managed to borrow a pair and spared the audience from his Blackadder impression). In the defence Dylan had an effective game particularly in the first half, Harj and Alex were very Harj and Alex like and Rob managed to to make an impact in both halves of the pitch.

In midfield Fisher and Roberts started to forge a positive partnership. The 3 players who roateted out wide (Harman, Lewis and Rajveer) all gave the opposition something to think about.

Lally and Shakespeare gave the opposition defence a torrid time (and both even managed to last the whole match).

Roll on the rest of the season.
