Match Report | The Seconds arrived at WGS for a midday start on the back of a 3 game losing streak. The opposition were Stafford 3rds who have been one of the early pace setters in the division. Keen to end our poor run of form Wulfs immediately took the game to Stafford and for a twenty-minute spell created numerous chances, Brookes going close to connecting to a cross on his reverse and Sunny testing the keeper with a well taken shot. Against the run of play and with their first attack Stafford took the lead with a scrappy goal. The half continued with both sides sharing an even amount of possession, Wulfs thought they had equalized when Gurnam capped a fine run from full back with shot into the corner of the goal, unfortunately the umpire had blown for a foul on him in the buildup. Wulfs did make the scores level just before half time, a long ball from Thompson in defence was directed to Sunny just over the half way line, rather than stopping the ball Sunny deflected it past the last Stafford defender leaving Lally to run alone into the last third of the pitch towards the D. With the goalie coming out to meet Lally at the top of the D he slid the ball under the keeper to score. The second half produced probably the best performance the 2nds have achieved all season. The forwards and midfield smothered most attempts by Stafford to bring the ball out, anything that did get through was ably handled by the back line. The second goal came from a howitzer shot by Sunny in the middle of the D. Wulfs were denied a third when Sunny drag flicked into the top corner from a short, the umpire adjudging the shot had been taken outside the D. The third goal did come when Snelford’s shot at the top of the D fooled everyone with its lack of pace and somehow found it’s way in the corner of the goal. The fourth goal was a fine solo effort by Murray who dodged defenders on the back line, the goalie expected a cross and Murray found a small gap to score at the near post. A couple of thank you’ s to players slotting in at unfamiliar positions, Rajveer at full back and Manni in wide midfield, efforts much appreciated by the team. Man of the Match for the game was shared by Gurnam and Richie. Gurnam was solid at full back but with enough attacking intent to cause concern for the opposition through open play and short corners. Richie dictating the pace of the game in central midfield. Final comment on the game comes from Umpire Prescott, telling the team that it was one of the best team performances he had witnessed in the last 30 years (and that it took him back to his own time as a skipper). |
