Match Report

Old Wulf’s 4th's welcomed Lichfield 6th's to WGS for today’s game, with Lovepreet making his debut from OW’s 5th team.

OW’s started slowly and it took them around 8 minutes to start playing. For those 8 minutes OW’s were second to the ball and struggling to make any ground, finding it slow going almost as slow as the traffic on the A41 through Tettenhall that morning. It was during this initial 8 minutes that OW’s found themselves behind with Lichfield finding the back of the net at around 4 minutes. Lichfield’s build up play was crisp with their younger players displaying excellent stick skill in the build-up, the successful shot coming from just inside the D. 0-1. Following the goal OW’s still struggled but at around 8 minutes finally started to string some passes together and began to have more of the ball in Lichfield’s half.  OW’s were growing in confidence as the half went on, and were now attacking with more determination, resulting in some short corners, but lacking that cutting edge in front of goal. Lichfield were not lying down however and when play broke down, were quick to break, passing the ball accurately, but OW’s stood firm.

HT 0-1

Second half, OW’s continued from where they left off, determined and exhibiting a desire not often seen in many of their previous games, OW were very much still in this game.  OW’s were dominating possession with Ahmed, Lovepreet, Tom & Harry all linking well and progressing through Lichfield’s ranks. It wasn’t long before OW’s got their reward, a pass through the middle found Tom, at the top of the D, turning the defender, a well-placed shot was dispatched into the left corner. 1-1. Several minutes later Ahmed went close following a mazy run out on the left, where he managed to get past the Lichfield defence placing a shot just wide of the left post. Lichfield were also looking for a second goal, calling Rowley into action to make a near post save when OW’s defence was breached. Score maintained at 1-1. OW’s defended the resulting long corner and again were finding their wide men this time it was Harry’s turn advancing down the right, but on this occasion, Lichfield successfully defended OW’s advance. With around 12 minutes to go OW’s were still overall on top of play. A ball from midfield found Tom who received the ball just inside Lichfield’s 23, with his back to goal he managed to turn creating a little space, went on to beat two players, but on advancing into the D was caught by the last defender and heading for the ground, somehow managed to get a fierce shot off under the keeper into the corner of the net.  A superb goal where tackles were ridden and sheer determination resulted in a contender for goal of the season.  2-1.  Lichfield were not finished, and with about 2 minutes left went close when one of their youngsters beat two defenders with quick stick and played an excellent ball across OW’s D, just narrowly missed by one of Lichfield’s forwards resulting in no shot on goal.

Full Time 2-1 Win

MOM goes to Tom Parry, who received most of the vote, but special mention must go to Ahmed who had his best game so far. Others to receive a player’s MOM vote were Ahmed (2 votes), Harry (1 vote), & Nic (1 vote).

Summary: A game where after a slow start OW found some determination, desire, and self-belief. With a few players missing and others playing out of position this was a well-earned and deserved result.
