Match Report | 4ths travelled to Whittington Barracks to play second in the table Lichfield 6ths and welcomed two returning players in Jabb and Martyn. Old Wulf’s lost the toss but started the game. Within two minutes Lichfield had their first attempt at goal, Lichfield were in the hunt and remained so for the first 20 minutes of the game. Old Wulf’s were struggling to get past the halfway line and only a resilient rear guard, some wayward shooting by Lichfield’s forwards, some excellent saves by Rowley and a little bit of luck kept the score line at 0-0. Lichfield were also winning the short corner count 4-0, but still Old Wulf’s held firm. Old Wulf’s did then find themselves in the opposition half and in Lichfield’s D, with around ten to go to the half Lichfield’s keeper pulled off a good save when one on one with Finn. Old Wulf’s then fell behind to a well worked goal where the ball was played in from wide to the top of our D and this time the Lichfield player made no mistake hitting the ball hard, low, and true to just evade Rowley. HT 0-1 For the restart Old Wulf’s made a substitution and rotated several personnel into different positions. Shortly after the restart Old Wulf’s conceded a second, again from open play and a strike from the top of the D which Rowley did well to get a glove on but couldn’t prevent the goal. Old Wulf’s continued to ‘Huff and Puff’ and throughout the half were starting to have more of the ball in the opposition’s half. Josh received the ball at the top of the D, turned and got a shot off that just went wide of the post. As the second half went on Old Wulf’s continued to try to get back into the game, having several short corners of their own but couldn’t convert them. It was during this half that two cards were issued, (first of the season I think in matches involving us) one for Lichfield for an offence and at the same time one for Old Wulf’s for airing their frustration towards the umpire. Despite this and Old Wulf’s going ahead on the short corner count (5-4 Old Wulf’s didn’t concede a short in the second half), Lichfield went on to score a further two goals winning the game 4-0. Full Time 0-4 Overall, a poor performance, but unlike Old Wulf’s last game (6th Nov), we were unable to grind out a result. Did not having a game last Saturday play its part? Were too many players slightly under the weather? Or was it just a bad day at the office? Whatever it was we need to put it behind us and focus on next week’s home gave versus Sutton Coldfield who we drew with in a pre-season friendly. Players MOM: Such was an indifference performance MOM votes were shared across 7 different players. Vish with 3 votes just pipping Neil, Manny & Rowley each on 2 to the award. |
