Match Report

4ths travelled to Furzebank way, Willenhall to take on Wednesbury 3rd's and with an 11:30 start would have the honour of starting the season for OWHC.  11 players made the journey taking on a younger Wednesbury squad of 12. Wednesbury initiated the game with a sporting pass to Old Wulfs. Old Wulfs struggled to string a series of accurate passes together and conceded possession far too easily. On the odd occasion that Old Wulfs did manage to forage inside of Wednesbury’s 23m line our forwards often found themselves out numbered and crowded out, the constant demand on our midfielders to assist the defence playing a huge part on their ability to support the forward line.  As Old Wulfs tried to press our attack broke down, and Wednesbury pushed forward in numbers which resulted in a goal to Wednesbury. Shortly after the restart Old Wulfs again found themselves under pressure as another Wednesbury attack through the middle of the park resulted in a second goal for Wednesbury.  A slight shuffle of manpower in midfield could not stem the flow and Old Wulfs went further behind 3-0 to Wednesbury.  At the stroke of Half time Old Wulfs found themselves defending a penalty corner, Old Wulfs defence stood firm and the short corner petered out without Wednesbury producing a shot.

Half Time 3-0

A slight formation shuffle was implemented, but within 2 minutes of the restart Old Wulfs concede their fourth following a disputed Wednesbury free hit in our 23.  Wednesbury were quick to take and punished Old Wulfs for being elsewhere. It was shortly after the restart that the formation change allowed Old Wulfs to put pressure on the opposition, Lewis, Manny,  Ed and Baz were working the ball well and some good interplay between James Fisher and Finn Townsend allowed Finn to pick his spot 4-1.  Old Wulfs were extremely unlucky not to have a second a few minutes later, again midfield was combining well with the forwards which resulted in a fine strike from James Fisher which ended up in the net, only for the goal to be ruled out. Spurred on by this we continued to push and were now spending more time in the oppositions half with shots just going narrowly wide of the uprights on more than one occasion. It was during just such press that possession was lost and a now tiring Old Wulfs side were caught short resulting in goal number 5 for Wednesbury.  Wednesbury went on to score another goal making it 6, but it could have been 7 on more than one occasion, the first from a penalty corner which was defended well by Noah on the far post. The second at the death where Rowley pulled off a double save that would be a contender for save of the season.

Full Time 6-1

Thanks to all players for their commitment during this game and for never giving up despite the tired legs.
