Match Report | If Old Wulfrunians thought this season was going well, with a lengthy winning streak as well as staging a dramatic comeback against promotion rivals last time out, it was about to get a whole lot better. Their opponents this week were Market Drayton 2s, who came to the Grammar School with a somewhat painful set of previous results that had left them bottom of the league. That wasn’t about to change. To say the game was one sided would be a staggering understatement. Old Wulfs were one up within about two minutes, when a smart penalty corner routine found Andy Hobley on the back post to put the home side into the lead. It was clear after that, there was only going be one result in this game, the only question being how many goals the hosts could get to boost their goal difference. Before halftime they added another three to their tally, with strikes by Will Ashworth, Joel Wall and Owen Shave. To their credit, despite being overawed in every department, Market Drayton kept plugging away and got themselves a goal that would, in the end, be their sole consolation. In these one-sided games, the goal rate often slows in the later stages. But in this one, it sped up. After the break, Old Wulfs came out rampaging and added another TEN to the scoreboard. Yes, ten. To describe every one of those goals would simply be too much to put in a match report, so the ten scorers in order went as follows: Wall, Lally, Harris, Denver, Shave, Ashworth, Griffiths, Ashworth, Ablard, Ashworth. An outstanding effort that resulted in a huge 14-1 win. And there is good authority that this was the largest winning scoreline in the league for the first team since 1980, and probably since the league began. So now this team are record breakers, can they make themselves promotion winners? Goals (Old Wulfs): Will Ashworth (4), Joel Wall (2), Owen Shave (2), Andy Hobley (1), Ricky Lally (1), Archie Harris (1), Matt Denver (1), Matt Griffiths (1), Darryl Ablard (1) Man of the match: Will Ashworth |
