Match Report |
Old Wulfrunians hosted local rivals Wednesbury in an effort to keep their winning run going, having won every game since their opening game loss to Telford.
The game started slightly delayed, and it seemed as though Old Wulfs were keen to make up for that with a blistering first ten minutes. They were two goals to the good before the visitors knew what had hit them, going one up, first through a close range finish from Owen shave, and then a neatly taken penalty corner goal from Ricky Lally, made it two.
The first half continued to be one-way traffic, with Wulfs able to enter the away side’s circle time and time again. It wasn’t long before it was three nil and when Matt Denver went on an excellent run, he was able to set up former Wednesbury player Joel Wall to score against his former club.
Before the break, there was time for one more goal, but this time from Wednesbury, who cleverly took a short penalty corner, catching Old Wulfs off guard and put away the chance to make it 3-1 at half time.
In the second half, there was a shift in tempo of the game, perhaps due to a key Old Wulfs player going off injured. But Wednesbury were able to capitalise on this and started to dominate more of the play.
Soon, they made this pressure tell, even though they were offered another goal quite easily by the home team. A defensive mix up between Old Wulfs defenders allowed a Wednesbury striker to intercept the ball in side the circle for a simple close-range goal to make it 3-2.
The next few minutes of the game were fraught, as Wulfs tried to figure out how they had let a three goal lead slip, and Wednesbury could smell blood.
However, with some stout defending and experienced players organising play, Old Wulfs were able to withstand pressure from the visitors to hold out for the win.
Not a pretty victory in the end, but one that keeps Old Wulfrunians’ winning streak going.
