Match Report

OWHC begun their summer league with a 3-3 draw against a full strength Wednesbury side. Preparations for the game were hampered by the withdrawals of 1s regulars Matt Denver and Andy Hobley, plus Will Ashworth (who had forgotten he agreed to play...) but Old Wulfs still had a strong squad of 1s and 2s to use.

The game started at a frantic pace, suiting Wednesbury, as Old Wulfs struggled to blow the cobwebs off following the lengthly COVID lay off. A direct ball forward by Wednesbury was deflected in the air near the D, causing panic in the Old Wulfs backline before Wednesbury scored (0-1). Old Wulfs responded well, beginning to find their touch to move the ball quickly and accruately. A good move started between the defence and Alex Gray, finding its way to Tom Williams on the right side who placed an excellent cross for Owen Shave to deflect in (1-1). Old Wulfs' jubulation would be short lived, as Wednesbury ran up the other end and scored another (1-2) before half time.

Debates were had by Old Wulfs at half-time, worthy of rivalling MENSA, and Old Wulfs responded superbly with Matt Griffiths equalising early in the second half by recovering a mis-controlled short corner and firing home from a narrow angle (2-2). Again, Wednesbury ran up the other end immediately after to score from a short corner (2-3). Old Wulfs responded well and continued to exert pressure on Wednesbury leading to an equaliser being chalked off for an obstruction in the build up. The pressure eventually told and Alex Gray placed a drag flick into the bottom corner to equalise (3-3). The remainder of the second half had Old Wulfs probing the Wednesbury defence but a mixture of good fortune and excellent goalkeeping prevented a winner from being found.

In all, a fairly good return for Old Wulfs with an impressive game from young Joe Mellis (constantly menacing an experienced Wednesbury backline) and the rest of the team as they found their footing and touch in the course of the match.
