Match Report | Old wulfs 2s started the league campaign against the team we should have finished against in Bridgnorth 3s, who were a distant 4th place when the league was finished and ended up being the highest placed team not promoted.
Old wulfs 2s turned up at a very wet Bridgnorth fully expecting a tough game but also buoyed by a revamped squad which was showing signs of confidence after a strong pre season. Old wulfs however had a shaky start to the game, struggling to get meaningful possession and when we did get it, being more than generous in our passing to blue shirts. Struggling to get out of our half at times, the defence and holding midfielders combined really well to keep Bridgnorth to half chances, and when they did get through on the rare occasion, Dan Jandu in goal did an excellent job of keeping them at bay. The half continued like this, bar 2 five minute spells where Wulfs penned Bridgnorth in and put really strong pressure on their back line. Unfortunately a very well worked short corner led to wulfs being 1-0 down at the break, but it could have been worse.
We knew we were much better than our first half performance and after a good chat about our somewhat sleepy performance, the second half was a much more even affair, with Wulfs really pressing the issue and getting a well deserved equaliser through Sahib Duhra. As the half went on Bridgnorth pushed harder for the win but couldn't find a way past the dominant back line. A series of short corners for Bridgnorth, all successfully defended by wulfs, saw out the game and a final draw of 1-1 was a fair result. The less said about the first half on the whole, the better, but a number of strong defensive performances meant Wulfs produced a result which on paper may not have been expected. Particular credit goes to Sahib Duhra, Tom Williams (on debut) and Dan Jandu, who made a strong spine for the team, but captain's pick for MOTM this week goes to Harj Duhra, who was largely impassable, with Dan Jandu pushing him very close in second.
We entertain newly promoted North Staffs 4s next week in what promises to be an interesting game. |
