Match Report | Old Wulf’s first team arrived at the Grammar School for the first time since last season, with the opening games of the season having to be played elsewhere, due to covid. Their opponents were Finchfield seconds, for a derby game that is always hotly contested. The match started with both teams playing cautiously, with few chances at either end. Then from nowhere, midway through the half, defender Ricky Lally completely mishit a backward pass, which went straight to a Finchfield striker. He then took this gift and gladly ran into the D to score low past the keeper. One good effect of this unfortunate incident was that it then opened the game up. In particular, Wulfs were pressing their opposition, looking to add goals to the tally. Before long, Matt McNay won a penalty corner, and Ricky Lally made up for his earlier mistake by dispatching it low into the bottom right. 1-0 The game then only seemed to be going one way, and the first period saw two more goals from Wulfs. A fast break down the left, eventually found Owen Shave in the D, who swiveled and flicked past the keeper from close range. Then another came from a similar move down the right from Matt Denver, who crossed the ball which eventually broke to Will Ashworth to finish into the bottom left. There was little to report from the second half, as Wulfs were in complete control and were happy to perform a complete and emphatic shut-out, denying their opponents barely a single shot at goal, safe in the knowledge of their 3-1 lead. A very encouraging start to the season for the 1s. Man of the Match: Matt Denver |
