Match Report

After two successive weeks of not playing due to opponents being unable to field teams, 5ths were away against Stone 4ths - with a late start on a wet and cool afternoon. Thanks to the Club captains extensive list of occasionally available players and powers of persuasion we got a squad of 12 to the game despite availability and injury problems that affected all our teams.

Stone took an early lead after we left a forward unmarked and they piled on pressure to increase their lead. However as 5ths settled we asserted some pressure ourselves and Rhys Jones was first to a loose ball in the Stone circle and scored the equaliser. From continued pressure we won a penalty corner and Barrie Sheldon - having injected the ball - received a return pass and placed his shot between the Stone keeper and post man to give us the lead.

Stone continued to press and got a deserved equaliser despite some excellent saves by Steve Rowlands in our goal. We regained the lead from our second penalty corner, this time from a direct shot by Neil Ward. As Stone pushed on for another equaliser, Simon Heron chased down a ball that everyone (except Simon and Barrie) thought was going out; Simon crossed the ball and Barrie got intron of the keeper to force our fourth goal home.

We had to continue defending to the last whistle, and did so successfully to earn a 4-2 win. Not only a good team effort, but a Club effort in getting the team out (with the President, Chairman, Club Captain and a Committee Member in the team we had a quorum for a committee meeting on the pitch!)
