Match Report

The second game of the season saw Old Wulfs make the rather inconvenient trip to Leek for a 4pm pushback against the Staffordshire club’s third team. Despite this hefty jaunt, a team of 14 was raised, so there were plenty of options from the bench.

As in the previous week’s game, the play began at a high and competitive tempo but with Wulfs having most of the play. Despite this, it was Leek who struck first in a breakaway move. Fortunately, it wasn’t long before there was an equaliser when Will Ashworth found space down the left. He crossed into the D, where Sahib Dhura was waiting to deflect in with a smart finish.

Before half time, Leek managed to get another goal when a shot from outside of the D struck the post and fell kindly for their centre forward who made no mistake from close range.  After the break, the game became increasingly scrappy with a few green cards being shown to both teams, but with frustrating inconsistency.

Wulfs remained unshaken by these distractions and were able to grab the game by the scruff of the neck. Firstly, with Will finding more space (this time down the right) and finding Owen with an accurate pass who easily swept the ball in. Then, when Wulfs won a penalty corner, Ben Hart pushed hard to the back post where Owen was again to get his second and give Old Wulfs the win. Not a pretty game, but a precious three points.
