Match Report

It’s finally here – the start of another hockey season! Old Wulfs’ first team started the campaign with some new faces and an all round fresher looking side than in recent years. Youngsters Ben Wall and Ben Ward, and also Matt Denver coming in from the 2s, started their first games in the top team in pre-season and made their league debuts against this first game against North Staffs 2s.
It was a competitive game, and in the first half there were some tasty battles in midfield, with also some equally tasty challenges from North Staffs players. Despite this, Wulfs won a penalty corner half way through the first period and got the first goal of the game when Simon pushed the ball to Andy Hobley on the back post to deflect in.
The game continued in a ‘spirited’ fashion with a North Staffs player eventually getting a green card for repeatedly fouling. Wulfs were starting to get a grip on the game, when disaster struck, and they conceded a goal after switching off at the back.
The remainder of the match saw Old Wulfs dominate most of the play and reducing the visitors to break away efforts and aerials that came to nothing. Unfortunately though, for all of Wulfs’ good passing moves that created a hat full of chances (including 2-3 on-on-ones) they too could not break the deadlock.
The game ended in a 1-1 draw which North Staffs seemed very happy with. The home side, however, trudged back up the hill ruing those missed chances to take all three points.
