The 5ths welcomed 4 familiar faces making their first appearance for the team this season; introductions completed the team set out to compete with a younger Finchfield side and both teams looked to attack and play the ball around. Martin Jandu - 5ths leading scorer last season - opened the scoring and confounded the statistical prediction model that we had developed last season, converting a penalty corner with his first shot on goal; there was a suspicion that he may have been re-calibrated during the closed season, particularly as he went on to complete his hat-trick from a fraction of the number of chances that would have been needed last season. After the opening goal, Finchfield pressed to get back into the game and scored with a well worked move finished by a deflection from Harry Carson. 5ths had to absorb significant pressure and held their formation well to stifle the Finchfield attacks, and defended well against penalty corners with Jab clearing two shots off the line. To add to Martin's hat-trick, James Fisher added another goal as 5ths had their turn to press their opponents. The game ended with a well earned 4 - 1 win from another good team performance.
