Match Report

OW 4ths took on Finches 4ths in the first competitive game on the new astro at the Royal School. The pitch played vey nicely (apart from the stretch of beach on the far side!)

The 4ths were a bare 11 with the club president standing by in case of emergency. The game started at a fast pace, which was not to relent throughout the game. OW competed well with the young finches midfield, but their towering midfielder dominated at first. Finches took the lead in a rather strange manner. Mann broke down the right and fed the ball through to the unmarked Bains, however the umpire put his foot in the way of the pass allowing the defender to lash the ball downfield and 2 touches later the ball was in the net! Finches added two more before half time - one an unstoppable drag flick, Bains went close for OW with a well worked short. The aforementioned midfielder was running the show so a reshuffle occurred with Mann dropping back to man mark him, which proved effective.

The second half saw the midfielder frustrated so he moved wide right, but got no change out of Ben Wall (giving away 2-3 feet in height) who was outstanding. Fiches added 2 more, 1 in the final seconds, but OW had created chances prior to that - Murray, Bains, Farmer all going close.

The 11 were excellent - 0-5 seemed very harsh. The game was played in an excellent spirit but yet again the lack of a goal scorer was our downfall.

I don't usually give a MoM and the whole team were excellent, but Ben Wall was truly outstanding today.
