Match Report | Unfortunately it could be the end of Old Wulfs’ promotion hopes as they slumped to a 3-0 defeat away at Newtown. Again they lose ground on the top two sides with matches quickly running out. In the home leg of this fixture, Wulfs were frustrated not to get the win as they drew with a Newtown side that sat back and launched constant aerials and crash balls from the back. Well, they didn’t change their game plan and Old Wulfs didn’t learn lessons they should have done from last time. Added to this tactical triumph, Newtown also looked to have a stronger team this time around, looking much more potent up front when they got the ball forward. Conversely, Wulfs did have a weaker side to usual, as is often the case with an away jaunt to Wales. But credit must go to Newtown who, once ahead, refused to give an inch back with tenacious and determined hockey. The goals they scored pretty much summed up their style of play which, despite being somewhat uncultured, was darn effective. The first was a crash into the D which an unmarked striker deflected in. The second came via a penalty stroke when a shot was stopped on the line after long ball forward. The third came from another long ball up to their striker as the Old Wulfs’ defence was again caught napping. If it’s not to be this season, it will be because Wulfs’ have struggled to adapt to tactics that do not suit their usual game, particularly against some of the “lesser” sides in the division that have played defensively. More things to work on. Man of the Match – Ben Humpherson |
