Match Report | Old Wulfs went into this game against Finchfield 2 on the back of a good run of wins. It was a 2-2 draw in the away leg earlier on in the season, so Wulfs were keen to prove to the local rivals who were the better side. Unfortunately, the game quickly went the way of Finches when Simon Palmer decided to gift the ball to one of their centre-forwards when under no real pressure. The player gladly took the opportunity presented to him, walking into the D and lashing the ball into the net. Not a good start. Luckily Wulfs reacted well and began to dominate the play after that, despite being a goal down. They soon got the equaliser when an overload ended with Archie Harris finishing from close range. After that, the momentum continued to swing the way of the home side with their quick attacks, particularly through Owen Shave down the right wing, causing Finches no end of trouble. Goals for Andy Hobley and Matt Litchfield soon followed, to take the game to a deserved 3-1 at halftime. The second half became characterised by the way certain Finchfield players reacted to umpiring decisions that led to green cards. Four for them in total. But Old Wulfs also had two greens themselves for bad tackles in what was a heated encounter, and one the umpires were determined to keep a lid on. Amid the mild controversy, Finchfield got one back after the ball found its way through a crowd of Old Wulfs defenders to meet grateful striker on the back post who tapped in. But after this, as in the first half, Wulfs were able to assert their dominance and reduce Finchfield to very few other chances. Before the game finished, the home side were able to score two more goals and run out 5-2 winners. The first of these came from another Archie Harris strike from close range and the other from Will Ashworth via a very pleasing short corner routine involving a neat one-two with Simon. It’s a big week next week, with matches on both Saturday and Sunday. Man of the Match – Owen Shave |
