Old Wulfs took on Finchfield 2s in what turned out to be a highly competitive encounter.
From the off Wulfs didn’t look entirely comfortable. A tight pitch as well as a Finchfield side that were pressing high, meant that there was precious little time and space to enjoy possession and they struggled to start meaningful passing moves.
This meant that it wasn’t long before the game had its first goal, and it went to Finches. They overloaded the Old Wulfs D, and before the ball could be cleared it fell to a striker who finished for 1-0.
Despite the goal, the game remained even in terms of play and soon after there was an equaliser. After the first shot from an Old Wulfs penalty corner was saved, Andy hobley was on hand to dispatch the rebound and make it 1-1 at the break.
After half time, Wulfs began to make their mark on the game, enjoying an impressive 10-15 mintute period where they started to win tackles in midfield and work the ball around effectively. A tidy Finish from Darryl Ablard to make it 2-1 was the fruit of this dominant portion of the game, but in hindsight Wulfs would come to rue not taking more of the chances that they created.
There were two or three occasions when there was only the keeper to beat, but he did his job well and smothered Wulfs’ attempts. Finchfield probably took heart from this, as they then came back into the game, creating some chances themselves and then scoring to level the contest up.
Overall the game was not an easy one to play in, its physical nature and claustrophobic conditions saw to that. So on balance a final score of 2-2 wasn’t such a bad result. On to the next one.
