Match Report

Let me begin by offering an apology for my apalling behaviour on Saturday which resulted in two yellow cards for inappropriate language (????), not a Captains example and no help to my team mates.

Having had to reshuffle the squad early on Saturday morning we faced our local rivals Finchfield at the Royal School. The game started badly for us and we were soon 2-0 down. The Captain was then yellow carded for appealing against the non award of a short corner. Having been given his marching orders the umpires then changed their minds and awarded the short corner.

With the skipper back on the pitch Old Wulfs had their best spell of the game and good work from Jones and Frost set up Hodgetts for a deserved goal.

The second half started badly for us and straight from the restart one of the young Finchfield players unleashed an unstoppable shot past Dillworth. Cue the umpires to disallow the goal for the ball not being in the area (It was clearly inside). Jones was then sent off for what was deemed his second bad challenge (the first for a shove in the back when he was actually playing the ball on the floor ?). We then had a chance to equalise with Thompson putting just wide.

Finchfield continued to look dangerous. Hill intercepted a pass and put the ball out. With the umpire a yard away the Finchfield attacker took the hit in three yards ahead of where the ball went, Finchfield almost scored from the chance. The skipper enquired (vigorously) as to why the attacker was allowed to take the extra yards. This resulted in another yellow card, although he was told he wouldn't be allowed back on the pitch (???).

Playing with 10 men for the rest of the game finally told and Finchfield managed to score 4 more goals (themselves being down shortly to 10 men for a yellow). Dillworth was unfortunate to concede a series of short corners, in one scramble the umpire awarded a short corner "for the safety of the keeper".

A battling permormance from the Wulfs an undisciplined one from the skipper.

Man of the Match - Hodgetts and Thompson had a lively game, the defence worked hard but I'll have to give it to Richard Frost who played the lone striker role with lots of endeavour (not bad for his first Old Wulfs game this season).

Special thanks to Arun Lally to agreeing to be 12th man at such short notice.
