2nd Team Vs Bromsgrove

It all started like a normal Saturday afternoon. We even had a substitute. Then the whistle went. Poor defending led to an early goal for Bromsgrove but Chris Tutton pulled us level with a comedic “bouncing” shot which somehow eluded their keeper and went in. Feeling that was unfair upon the opposition we contrived to let them take the lead again at 1-2. Some excellent work down the right wing by Joe “Suarez” Satchwell led to Tutton’s 2nd goal. Hayden netted our next two; his first following a goalmouth scramble; the second following a nice run from Will Ashworth.

However at the opposite end we had managed to concede a further three goals. One goal conceded after Rob Hemmings shins were mistaken by the opposition for the ball and treated as they thought appropriate in a goalmouth scramble.

The opposition were effectively playing with two up front, a player in the hole behind, and a left winger and it took too long for the experienced Old Wulfs defence to reshape appropriately. The call to arms by Al Thompson during the waves of Bromsgrove attacks was later roundly derided in the bar as too “Tally Ho chaps” and in any event was told at the time by Rich that he was wrong. Nonetheless whilst the defence has certainly had better days the opposition frequently attacked with spare players and not unsurprisingly managed to convert some of their opportunities. The half time whistle left us losing 4 – 5.

The opposition failed to realise that the scoreline just gave the skipper more ammunition for his usual Churchillian half time morale boosting team talk.

Imbued by his own wise words the skipper rapidly equalised but 5-5 seemed very dull so we let them get another to focus the attackers minds again. Ed duly responded with his 2nd to level at 6-6 with what was a hotly disputed goal following a short corner.

Some of the spectators half time bets on the score were now looking good. However the final result could have been anything. Fortunately we managed a little more solidity at the back and the attackers continued some excellent hockey with Rich Roberts and Will interlinking for the 7th and 9th goals sandwiching Joe’s much deserved goal for the 8th. In between their keeper managed a number of excellent saves and we really should have been into double figures.

As the scoreline showed when we attacked we looked dangerous and Joe in particular managed to frequently get past his marker and was a constant threat. There were other fine individual attacking displays but Joe was a clear winner of Man of the Match.”
