Match Report

Market Drayton have won every game they have played this season, but Old Wulfs have surely tested them more than any other team in the division.

Earlier in the season 3-0 did not really reflect the balance of play, and once again at Keele Uni Wulfs gave Drayton a scare.

In fact for the first 15 minutes the away side were much the stronger, regularly threatening to break down the Drayton defence with energetic play and accurate passing. Market Drayton under pressure began to give the ball away and Wulfs finally took the lead with a neat move. Lally found M. Cartwright on the left hand side of the circle; a firmly struck ball allowed Ablard to reach out a stick and deflect into the goal.

Wulfs nearly made it 2 but for some decisive work by the big man in goal.

At the other end Brown neutralized the Drayton top scorer and Litchfield cut out midfielders almost at will.

But Drayton equalized with a penalty corner. This gave the home side more confidence, and some skilful attacking play threatened to open up more opportunities. At half-time though it was level.

The second half was a battle of attrition. Neither side could really create danger, or indeed pass the ball around with much aplomb. It needed a disastrous defensive mix-up to break the deadlock and Old Wulfs duly obliged. The ball was given away and the Drayton forwards completed a simple one-two to round the keeper and score. No swear-words seemed sufficient.

The game petered out somewhat although Wulfs could have levelled with a late penalty corner. But didn't.

All in all, an  enjoyable game and played in the best spirit, despite the disappointment of losing. We wish Market Drayton success in West Mids Prem next season.
