Match Report

Wulfs were looking to bounce back after defeat to Market Drayton last week, but didn't.

Wednesbury began the game with all guns blazing, and created a number of opportunities before finally taking the lead, despite a number of wonderful saves from Pearson in goal.

The pressure told further as the lead was doubled and Wulfs looked in serious trouble. A penalty stroke save kept the score within reaching distance. However the strategy of pushing Birch and Brown further forward began to bring Wulfs into the game, and the half finished with things looking slightly brighter as they began to adjust to the slow and slippy sub-standard pitch.

The second half was a tale of two umpires. As Old Wulfs threatened to get back into the game, Ablard smashed a ball into the circle. Nobody could get to it, however the Wednesbury keeper somehow managed to get a touch and score a bizarre own goal. Cue some clown-like umpiring as the man in yellow danced gangnam-style between signalling a goal and a 16yd hit. After consulting with his opposite number he finally got it right and awarded the goal.

At 2-1 it was anyone's game and the momentum was with Old Wulfs. Wednesbury managed to attack and put a man through on goal, only to be robbed of the ball on the edge of the circle by the keeper - but the umpire signalled another stroke.

From 3-1 down it was always going to be a tricky one to rescue and Wulfs pushed men forward only to be caught on the break twice more. With only 11 men there was no way to mount a late comeback and the final scoreline was 5-1. Nevertheless Old Wulfs are playing with spirit and determination, and will surely pick more and more points up as the season progresses barring injury.
