Match Report

After a week of turmoil Old Wulfs arrived at Droitwich in desparate need of a high quality performance, with two players unavailable and the coach banned, it seemed like a tall order.

Enter Richard Cartwright, who kindly agreed to step into Thorpe's shoes (not pleasant) and help from the sideline. After a Churchillian speech pre-game, he retired to stalk the sideline, gesticulating wildly like a demented Larry David.

Wulfs responded by conceding a goal in the first 10 minutes after giving the ball away from their own penalty corner. It seemed like another hard-luck story for Old Wulfs. But there is a new-found resilience in the team, and the visitors soon began to take control. Droitwich seemed shell-shocked when Wulfs nearly converted a beautiful high-speed passing move, Shave only denied by a spectacular stick save from the 'keeper.

It wasn't long though before Ablard fed Tutton for an equaliser, and Wulfs then took the lead thanks to a surging run from newly svelte Dave Cartwight, the finish provided by Shave.

A third from Birch completed a deserved half-time lead of 3-1, but Wulfs weren't finished yet, and totally dominated the second half. Skipper Griffiths looks like a new man in his defensive midfield position and rarely looked stretched, whilst Ben Hart was imperious as he pranced 'mongst the Droitwich defenders like a gazelle with a sore toe.

Ablard scored another but the best goal was saved for last. Hart took the ball wide to set up a tight-angled opportunity, and with the onrushing 'keeper pouncing to smother the ball, he chipped an inch perfect effort into the far post.

Game, set and match to Old Wulfs, and a thoroughly deserved first win of the season.
