Match Report

The fifths travelled to Stone for a 4pm start to play Stone 5ths, and the weather was surprisingly better than anticpated (only a bit cold and a bit wet). The Stone team were overall physically more powerful and had a particularly strong player in midfield (one of their regulars where, unfortunately for us, his umpiring obligations this meant he could make this game...). An early injury to Martin Jandu meant that Dan Taylor had to step up to a role alongside Alex Sankey in midfield - and he did so with good application, the two players working hard and competing well. Despite his injury, Martin managed to bag two goals, and probably because of his injury miss one or two more opportunities that came his way. At the other end, calamities in defence led to three Stone goals, and we conceded another two that were 'fair comment' for good play. Jake Aldersley came to life in the second half and showed the skill and confidence we saw a couple of weeks ago. Paul Johnson showed good movement off the ball and solid technique when in possession. Ben Wall had a powerful game pushing forward from the centre of defence. Dan Jandu had another solid game in goal. Late in the game James Archer sustained a wrist injury, so at that point we had two of our 'over 16's' struggling with injury. We lost 2 - 5 but battled and created openings going forward throughout the game; heads did not drop. And for some of the younger players they had the now rare experience of going from the pitch to the changing rooms and into the clubhouse without having to get into a car.
