Match Report

The 5ths had 11 players for their visit to Leek, including Ian Wall and his 3 sons Tom, Ben and James - it cuts down on the phone calls and travel admin! Having been beaten by Leek at home in the first game of the season, we were expecting a competitive game and we got one. Leek's players moved well off the ball and created problems for our defence throughout the game. However, we were also moving well and put the Leek defence under pressure from the start. Having had an early shot only find the side netting, soon afterwards Paul Johnson gave us the lead with a well struck shot after controlling an incisive pass from Ian Wall. Leek equalised with a scrappy goal, but we regained the lead when Barrie Sheldon - having injected the short corner - deftly deflected the shot between the keeper and post defender. Leek equalised again when we failed to clear the ball after Dan had saved the initial strike from a short corner, but we were soon back in front when Tom Wall found Alex Sankey in the Leek 'D' and Alex finished confidently with a reverse hit. We killed off the game with a fourth goal - a repeat of the second with Barrie Sheldon injecting a short cornet and deflecting the shot between keeper and defender. A really good team performance against one of the stronger teams in our league.
