Match Report

A new season for the 4ths started away to Bridgnorth (the first of three trips there this season). Our opponents today their fifth team.

The day started badly with one of our cars stuck on the Bridgnorth bypass. With the game scheduled for midday, at 12:15 we were about to start the game with seven players and without a goalkeeper. Thankfully the other car arrived. However without time for a proper warm up Wulfs started the game sloppily, inside two minutes possession was lost easily and the youngest player on the pitch flicked the ball in the air and then flicked the ball over the oncoming keeper (Matt).

Time to regroup and Wulfs played themselves into the game, Roberts and Becket building us a foothold in midfield. The chances soon came and from our first short corner a Mann shot was deftly deflected past the keeper by Wilson.  Both sides created chances but the next clear opening was dispatched by Wulfs. Roberts played in Wilson who fed Lally to fire in for the lead.

Wulfs kept Bridgnorth at bay at the other end with debutant Matt in goal playing a blinder. At the other end Wulfs almost increased their lead, Wilson going close from a Lally cross. After confusion in the opposition defence Lally tried to lob the prostrate goalie from an acute angle, the goalbound effort plucked out of the air.

The second half started with Wulfs still in the ascendancy, Roberts fed Lally, his first effort came off the keepers pads, the second swept home.

The rest of the half was fairly even but Wulfs continued to make the better chances, Fisher and Murray building well on the right. In the last fifteen minutes Bridgnorth began to press and pulled a goal back. The game became more frenetic, Wilson had a shot cleared off the line, Lally shooting just wide.

Wulfs struggled to hold possession and from some sloppy passing in the attacking half the ball was moved to the other end of the pitch and Bridgnorth equalised.

The game finished level. An impressive team performance but lessons to be learned about game management and seeing a game out.

However points on the board for game day one (a lot sooner than last season) so positive signs for the season ahead and an impressive debut from Matt.
