Match Report

Old Wulfs 4ths started the day second bottom in the table. With the side unsure of the number of teams to be relegated this season, today's final league fixture against Bridgnorth 5ths was a must win to maximize our chances of staying up.

The opposition started the day in the top group of teams in our league. They also came with the most youthful side we have faced all season, 8 of the starting 11 under the age of 18. However this bunch of youngsters were a talented group displaying plenty of pace and skill.

The first half possession was bossed by Bridgnorth but it was the more experienced Old Wulfs team that created the better chances. Artist blasted a Lally aerial pass agonisingly over with a shot on the half volley. O'Sullivan fired a shot from the edge of the box onto the post, he also went close a couple of times again before the break. Bridgnorth continued to control the middle of the park and proved their attacking prowess with a neat cross and a shot blasted narrowly wide.

In the half time team talk the team were reminded of the need to gain more control of the game. Wulfs started the second half impressively with O'Sullivan seizing on a half chance to score the opener. The attacking commitment was maintained with a short corner won, a drag flick by Lally R was palmed away by the keeper. The next short corner brought better rewards with Lally R keeping the drag lower and this one evaded the keeper 2-0. The last 15 minutes was a nervous affair with Bridgnorth using pace to cut through the Wulfs  defence to cut the lead.

The rest of the half was scrappy but Wulfs were resolute and kept out their younger opponents.

A 2-1 win and the 4ths have moved themselves off the bottom of the table in the space of two games.

A fantastic effort from the lads, a wonderful reward for your commitment.

The stand in captain for these last two games Russel Mann ably assisted by Andy Hamilton managing from the sidelines. Your efforts much appreciated.

It has been a difficult but enjoyable season and I'd like to thank every one of the players who've lined up for us this season.

I am stepping down from the role of Captain, so if anybody fancies the job please make it known.

Finally good luck to Phil Carless who has been guesting for the Wulfs over the last month, who will be continuing his hockey journey in the fair city of Dublin.
