Match Report | Wednesbury 3-3 Old Wulfrunians Old Wulfs traveled to a typical rainy Wednesbury for the first friendly of the season. (Seriously I don't think it's ever been dry). The team had gone through some last minute adjustments as Ben was stuck in Manchester and Owen Shave injuring himself playing football the morning of the match. Honestly who plays football? Shave taking the medical advice of the Internet decided he couldn't play 10 minutes before the meet. As a result a last minute call up for Elliot Gwilt helped the 1s to have a team of 11.
Despite the last minute adjustments and the team turning up 15 minutes before pushback due to Kam forgetting not only his white top but white socks, the team started the game patiently passing the ball around and transferring around the back. Wednesbury didn't pose much of a threat when they kept possession but we're always a threat on the break. These break away chances forced Colin into some early saves. 10 minutes into the match and Roberts pulled up with a calf strain this resulted in a reshuffle of positions, Roberts going up as a centre forward. Despite the injury Old Wulfs took the lead through Will after a turn over of possession in the midfield found Roberts holding up the ball and playing in Will. His initial shot was saved, but Will tucked in the rebound. 1-0 at half time.
The second half became a much more open contest. Wednesbury began to press higher up the pitch and Old Wulfs abandoned their simple passing and started to run with the ball too much. This allowed Wednesbury to win possession high up the pitch and equalise. Old Wulfs found their passing again and won a short corner. Palmer slipping the ball back to Ablard to deflect in for 2-1. Wednesbury equalised through their own short corner 5 minutes later as Colin made the initial save the rebound fell to a Wednesbury player who lifted it into the roof of the net. Wednesbury began to build some momentum and after Old Wulfs failed in tracking their runners back after losing the ball in opposition 25, Wednesbury scored their 3rd goal sliding the ball past Colin into the far post. Despite going a goal down Old Wulfs reacted well and in the final seconds won a short corner as Kam was deliberately obstructed. The injection was miss trapped by Birch, however Litchy backing up fired the ball in at Will where he deflected in for 3-3. A lot of positives considering the sitution at kick off, but also things to work on.
Man of the Match Litchy, a solid performance in left defence.
DoD with a doubt is Shave crying off 10 minutes before the meet (I'm sure there will be a fine for this) |
