Match Report | We travelled to North Staffs today with both sides occupying much different positions in the league table. In the first half Staffs bossed the midfield and created more chances. However the back line stood firm particularly Dillworth in goal who was having another stormer. At the other end Wulfs were restricted to a single chance but what a chance. From a wide position a cross came in avoiding both attackers and defenders alike, it made it's way to Wall (I) at the far post and his shot went just the wrong side of the post. So half time and both teams level, the 2nd half followed the pattern of the first. Staffs continued to create chances and eventually the deadlock was broken with a scrappy effort. Staffs pushed for more but the defence continued to shine. Midway through the half another Staffs chance was halted by a Wulfs foot in front of goal, penalty stroke awarded. The young home player stepped up to take the stroke but it was brilliantly saved by Dillworth. With the storm weathered Wulfs pushed another attacker forward and for the last 10 minutes started to push the home team back into their own half. Some half chances were created but the final ball evaded us. With two minutes to go Lally surged down the wing and won a short. The first short was stopped by a foot to earn us another. During the second after some scrappy clearances the ball found itself with Artist whose goalbound shot was cleared. Sadly for Wulfs we ran out of time, defeat by a single goal. We may not have matched the opposition for skill today but we did for commitment and almost earned a draw. Man of the match today Ian Dillworth, superb as has been for the majority of this season. Special mention for James Fisher who made his 4th team debut today, his highlight being putting his marker on the floor on a couple of occasions which did generate some colourful language. |
