Match Report

Old Wulfs in match 5 of the season came up against a Newtown side that had not yet won in the season and had struggled to get a full squad out for their previous 4 matches. However Old Wulfs faced a full squad of Newtown players who were up for a scrappy match.

Old Wulfs got off to a great start scoring within the first few minutes of the game with a routine straight off the training ground. Ball down the left to the baseline, ball cut back across the D and a tap in at the back post for Owen Shave. Within minutes of the restart Griff had made it 2-0 and Old Wulfs looked to be cruising. However several missed opportunities during the game would keep the score close. Newtown grew in confidence as the game remained 2-0 and won themselves a short corner the initial flick going well wide of the goal struck Dave Cartwright's inner thigh and deflected in for 2-1. The score remained 2-1 until half time.

The second half started now the first half finished, Old Wulfs keeping possession but not moving the ball quick enough to take advantage of the spaces and Newtown breaking down play with fouls where ever possible. This contributed to a fractured display by Old Wulfs. Newtown continuing to grow in confidence managed to pull level and set alarm bells ringing for Old Wulfs. A few changes and conceding the second goal seem to wake Old Wulfs and the style of play that had put them 2-0 up returned. Griff exchanging passes with Litchy and Abalrd found himself In the D and striking on his reverse for 3-2. This was made 4-2 when Birch driving along the baseline cut the ball back to top D where Abalrd calmly slotted away. Litchy in his man of the match performance help set another goal as he found Birch in space inside the D where he calmly slotted in on the reverse for 5-2. Newtown pulled a goal back by scoring with the back of their players stick after a scramble in the D. Ablard finished off the scoring with a penalty stroke sending the keeper the wrong way.

A disjointed performance by Old Wulfs who will need to improve to get out of this league, but more importantly 3 points and a return to winning ways.
