Match Report

There are some games that you look back on and think did that really happen!

Old Wulfs 4this travelled to a late 4pm start at Beaconside to face a Stafford side struggling in the league. In the first minute Murray raced down the wing and put in a cross to Lally who shot first time, a fine save from the keeper preventing the goal.

Thus the pattern for the match was set, attack after attack ensued but the goal wouldn't come. In the first half chances fell to Evans, Murray, O'Sullivan and Harrison without success.

At the other end of the pitch from their first attack Stafford scored with a misfit shot after some untidy attempted clearances. The goal was met with shock from the Wulfs and the rest of the half was a rather flat affair.

At half time Captain Hamilton rallied the troops and changed the shape of the team to more attacking 4-3-3 line-up. Wulfs almost equalised immediately but the goal still wouldn't come.

Stafford gained confidence and started to hold the ball better. With 7 minutes to go Wulfs finally made the breakthrough Dilraj went on a run and dispatched his shot. Cue an onslaught for the final few minutes, unfortunately this left gaping holes in midfield and defence, with another rare attack, Stafford broke and scored.

There was still time for an equaliser, but the hockey gods were against us. The best opportunity fell to Evans who deflected a Lally whack into the D, agonisingly the ball came back off the bar.

We lost 2-1, gutting defeat. Early Xmas present for Stafford.

A few things you don't normally see on a Hockey field

1) Captain Hamilton on the sidelines being told off by the umpire, after he accused said umpire of obstructing some of the Wulfs players.

2) The hapless student who parked next to the pitch pointing his headlights directly on to the pitch, after a few strong words from Hill, he extinguished them (not a mistake he's likely to repeat)

3) Nice pitch shame about the lights. Visibility was poor and the umpires are to be commended on keeping the game going (although they did on occasion miss some footy skills from the Wulfs defence)
