Match Report | The old guard prevail !
We travelled to Newcastle with another much changed line-up. In fact the squad contained 6 of the side playing in the over 50's cup tomorrow afternoon. To counter this we also gave a 4th team debut to badger Bhav Rai.
We started the game against a youthful North Staffs seeing very little of the ball. However the home side couldn't carve out a clear opportunity. Completely against the run of play O'Sullivan fed Lally whose reverse flick evaded the keeper 1-0. The home side were visibly deflated as we'd scored with our first real opportunity.
We cancelled the opposition out until half time. The 2nd half was dominated by Old Wulfs. The home side couldn't penetrate the defence of Munn, Hill, Carver and Savage. Anything that did get through was ably cleared by keeper Dilworth.
Cooper mopped up in front of the back 4 allowing Harrison to feed in the forwards. One of these balls led to a 50-50 Chase between Lally and a defender. Lally got there first and the ball was pounced on by O'Sullivan who beat the keeper.
This led to a spell of consistent pressure down the right. Munn pushing forward and linking well with Murray and Lally to create a number of chances.
Within this spell of pressure Lally found himself on the edge of in front of two defenders. Whilst looking on verge of losing the ball he somehow managed to evade the defenders and passed to the back post for O'Sullivan to slot home.
Sam Buckley who had frustrated the home side all match with his hassling and tackling picked up a couple of mementos in the 2nd half. The first a lifted ball into his body which forced him off for a short spell and the second a late green card for a mistimed tackle.
The home side picked up a late consolation but Old Wulfs held on for a deserved win.
Two wins out of three to start the season. |
